Short intro

As with many retail segments these days, Amazon dominates the publishing industry, too! Looks like 70% of e-books and 50% of US-printed books are sold through Amazon.com. For all authors, this means that if they have to roll up their sleeves if they really want to reach more readers and sell more books. Yes, it's time to build that Amazon book page your precious creation needs. It ain't gonna sell itself, that's for sure!

Do your keyword research

If you know nothing about keywords and how they help, it's simple: they're the words that people type in the Amazon search box when they want to buy something. For books, keywords look like this: "motivational books" "books for single ladies", etc.

Why keywords matter? Because if your book targets "single ladies" and these words are not featured anywhere in your listing, then how are people who search for these books land on your book page? They won't! This is what keyword optimization does: it investigates, extracts, and uses the most relevant keywords for your book throughout your Amazon book listing. Basically, it puts your book on the Amazon Algorithm Map. For excellent keywords research, there are many online tools you can choose from Sonar from Sellics, KW finder, or Merchant Words (these are just a few). How do you do this?

Let's assume again you've written a self-help book for women. If you type "self-help women" into the Sonar search box, you'll get keywords like "self-help books for women", "women self-help books", "self-help books for women best sellers", etc. Create a list with all these keywords and keep it handy.

Amazon product listing optimization will boost your book with 2 key success factors: 1. enhanced readability for real readers (and Amazon shoppers, of course) AND maximum discoverability or exposure through the A9 Amazon search algorithm.

A glimpse at the competition

Next, take any of these keywords and copy-paste it on Amazon books. For instance: "self-help books for women." We notice 60,000 results for "self-help books for women." 60,000 books just like yours. Not the easiest way is to follow the leader! As you can see, "Girl, Wash your face: stop believing the Lies About who you are so you can become who you were meant to be" is by far, a best seller. Check their book page. This is your new destination! That's where you want your book to be 1-2 months or 1 year from now!

Sell & write that catchy copy form the heart

Write persuasive texts written from the heart all over your page listing sections. From "About the Author" to "From the back cover", make everything sound natural, exciting and infuse it with your best keywords. Relevant key phrases (keywords) drive readers to your book page, while persuasive & punchy copywriting that speaks from the heart convinces them that your book is a must-buy!

Read customer reviews

Oh, customer reviews! I cannot recommend them enough. The most underrated source of knowledge ever & the best FREE resource of powerful insights.

Read your customer reviews and your competitors' reviews. For the best seller "Girl wash your face..." here are a few thoughts jotted by its happy readers: "EVERY WOMAN needs to read this!" This book won’t change your life, YOU WILL!" read them and reflect if your book is like that.

But hold on! 1-star reviews say as much, for instance: "For anyone who has ever had to deal with real-life issues such as poverty, depression, co-dependency, illness, abuse, dysfunctional family or loneliness, I recommend you seek elsewhere because this book is just one long never-ending humblebrag." Perfect time to reflect if your book is just another boring humblebrag. I'm sure it's not, but I hope you get the picture.

Turn these secret thoughts or rants written by readers into your copywriting powerhouse. Polish your Amazon page section keeping these brutally honest testimonials in mind and most importantly, always remember that this is your audience, too. This is how they talk. This is how they expect you to approach them. Speak their language. Show them you know them because now you do!

Use all the available space

Don't waste any space! Use it to the max with powerful short stories, triggers, questions, taglines, bullet points. Anything that makes your audience tick and not get bored between the lines. Let's not forget SEO - yes, remember that keywords list? Use the keywords here and there, without forcing it into your text. Don't ruin the natural flow. Know your page's limits (number of characters allowed for each section):

✔️ About the Author - 2000 characters

✔️ Book Description - 4,000 characters (including spaces)

✔️ Editorial Review - 20,000 characters. Here, Kindle books have no restrictions and allow you to add all reviews at once in the box, while for hardcover and paperback books, the text boxes are limited to 5 reviews and a 4,000 character count.

✔️ 8,000 characters for From the Inside Flap, From the Author, and From the Back Cover.

Don't be afraid of Enhanced Branded Content

Although it's known for not being indexed (therefore, not a great SEO help!) EBC content converts better than any HTML (be it even SEO-rich!). Here's how this content looks like:

Amazon Back-end Keywords

Even if you're no master of Amazon keyword indexing, what you need to know is that you got to get all the 249 character-space available in the "Search terms" field from your Keywords tab filled with the BEST WORDS related to your book. Amazon Backend Keywords are the hidden search terms that once added to a product listing, boost its visibility. These are not visible on the book listing page, but they're the secret to getting your book found by as many readers who are interested in it.

Use the Amazon search terms section to place generic keywords that describe your book, keyword variations, colloquial terms, acronyms, or just any other relevant word that's important but didn't make it to your other sections (bullets, title, product description). Don't mention other writers/competitors, their ASINs, products, and avoid keyword repetition because Amazon doesn't award repetitiveness a higher ranking or a VIP indexing at all.
